12/20/2006 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Chicago Bears quarterback Rex Grossman, Philadelphia Eagles safety Brian Dawkins and St. Louis Rams punter Matt Turk have been named the NFC Players of the Week for Week 15.
Grossman was named Offensive Player of the Week after completing a career-best 29-of-44 passes for 339 yards in a 34-31 overtime victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the Bears clinched homefield advantage for the playoffs. Grossman also threw for two touchdowns and finished with a 104.3 passer rating. Chicago is 7-0 this season when Grossman's passer rating eclipses 100.0.
This is Grossman's first-career Player of the Week Award. He was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Month for September earlier this season.
Dawkins recorded a game-high 12 tackles, forced two fumbles and added an interception in Philadelphia's 36-22 victory over the New York Giants in a crucial NFC East battle to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors.
This is Dawkins' second-career Player of the Week Award. He also received the honor during Week 4 of the 2002 season.
Turk, the Special Teams Player of the Week, punted five times for a 49.8-yard average in the Rams' 20-0 win against the Oakland Raiders. Turk also placed two punts inside the 10-yard line and limited Oakland to just five yards on returns. He also booted a 74-yard punt, the longest punt by a Ram since Hall of Famer Bob Waterfield's franchise-best 88-yard punt in 1948.
In his 12th season, Turk has received Player of the Week honors five times.

The Cl
In terms of sports wagering, the NFL is "the most popular game in town." The explanation behind that is easy.
It is called the "pointspread."
Many years ago, NFL games, as well as the more popular college games, used straight odds as a vehicle for betting. For example, if the Bears were playing the Giants, and it shaped up as a competitive contest, the Bears might be, say, a 7/5 favorite. If they were playing an also-ran, it might be 10/1. Well, there is a point where a line becomes prohibitive, as far as betting the favorite. And who would waste money betting an underdog that has virtually no chance? Such a setup did not contribute to promoting betting action.
But in modern sports betting, a "pointspread" is used.
A NFL pointspreads are exactly that, a pre-established point difference between the two sides that will, for all intents and purposes, create a handicap that evens things out, and in doing so, produces comparable wagering activity on both sides of that proposition. So in lieu of a odds figure in which to bet the team to win outright, the Bears might be a three-point favorite over the New York Giants, and a 17-point favorite over the also-ran. Now that the team that is the underdog can "get" points, there can be equal action on both sides.
In sportsbooks, this is usually done with efficiency by charging the losing bettors 10% extra - in effect, bettors are laying 11/10 on those games. So they are actually betting $110 to win $100. If they lose, they pay the "vig." If they win, they simply collect.
The establishment of the pointspread as the corner stone around which team sports like football can be wagered upon was truly what brought gridiron betting into the stratosphere for online football betting .
